Hello! My name Aaron Leung and I am asking for your support to help get me nominated onto Vision Vancouver's School Board slate for the 2018 Municipal Election.
Committed to Our Community
I am a passionate community leader who seeks to work and engage with youth and members of our diverse communities. I was born and raised in Champlain Heights and a proud Killarney Secondary alumni. I am a locally and nationally recognized young leader for my work in youth engagement on local issues and as a young, sustainability advocate for our future generations. Over the past eight years, I have dedicated my time to facilitating youth engagement in civic decision-making and empowering young people to take action in their communities. I'm ready to step up and run for public office in order to support our public education system and spearhead youth engagement across Vancouver.
Currently, I serve as the Chair of the City of Vancouver Children, Youth and Families Advisory Committee whose mandate is to "advise City Council on matters related to children, youth and families". We work with a diverse range of people from youth to elders. I have worked hard to create an environment that is conducive to youth engagement with staff. I have led our work on public education advocacy at both the local and provincial level by working with youth to speak to their MLAs and getting City Council to back a by-election to restore democratic governance at the Vancouver School Board.
An Award Winning Young Leader
Over the past years, I've been fortunate to be recognized for my work as a leader in the community. In 2014, I received the City of Vancouver Greenest City Leadership Award for my work at the Vancouver School Board including co-founding the Vancouver School Board Sustainability Conference, which is now in its successful sixth year. In 2015, The Starfish Canada, a non-profit dedicated to promoting youth-led sustainability initiatives, named me to their list of Top 25 Under 25 Environmentalists. In 2016, Corporate Knights, a magazine distributed with the National Post, named me to a national list of Top 30 Under 30 in Sustainability.
Academically, I'm a third-year scholarship student at Simon Fraser University studying Global Environmental Systems and Political Science seeking to deepen my understanding of environmental issues, how they impact society and how we can seek solutions together through community dialogue and policy implementation.
I'm a capable young leader who is passionate about working and engaging with community members. I'm ready to take the next step. Join me!
